Question

Hey Yann, I ve been intrested in Uploading an Image from the site of the Indian Air Force
Image Link -> https://indianairforce.nic.in/admin/assets/images/outerimages/journey/27sqn.jpg
Image Source -> https://indianairforce.nic.in/history-timeline#section-10
IAF T&C -> https://indianairforce.nic.in/terms-and-conditions

Ive not been able to find a template for the IAF (unlike the Indian Navy and the Indian airforce), so ive been thinking of uploading it under GODL-India. Will there be any licencing issues? Thanks in Advance 4-RAZOR 01 (talk) 09:54, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

@4-RAZOR 01: Hi, I am not sure. Please ask on COM:VPC. Yann (talk) 10:29, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
okay! 4-RAZOR 01 (talk) 10:48, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by AustrianAlien

I'm not familiar with the exact specifics of Australian copyright law but the 1968 act would make those images copyrighted in 1996 (and thus URAA Restored) unless they were PD already. Australia used the 1911 British copyright act at the time, which I think would protect the images long enough for the 1968 act to apply, although I am not completely sure on this. Traumnovelle (talk) 20:47, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

No, please read the license. Thanks, Yann (talk) 20:58, 15 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The licence doesn't indicate when it was PD, just that is today. Traumnovelle (talk) 08:39, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Traumnovelle: You must read all the licenses: {{PD-Australia}} and {{PD-1996}}. Yann (talk) 09:58, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Well after looking at this again I'm confused as to why PD-Australia was applied. The images were taken in Vancouver according to the caption and the draft article en:Draft:Anna Helen Mahler-Aszkanazy suggests the subject was in Canada at the time and never visited Australia. Traumnovelle (talk) 10:07, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
{{PD-Canada}} offers exactly the same. Yann (talk) 10:17, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Doubt

Hi @Yann.

I was confused, no votes were presented in this FPC. Is this a glitch or something? Rudhra Varma (talk) 13:33, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Rudhra Varma: No, it is just an ordinary image which doesn't interest anyone. Yann (talk) 13:58, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Inadequate closure of DR at Commons:Deletion requests/File:A Família - Proclamação ao Mundo.jpg

Hi, Yann, how are you?

I’d like to point out that speedily closing the mentioned DR was not adequate, because none of the two points made in its proposal are valid - FoP in Brazil does not differentiate text from other copyright and the fact that the original speech was given in the US is not relevant (since copyright is untouched by FoP). While there could be other points to be made, closing the discussion after one hour makes it impossible for them to be presented.

Thanks for your time and happy editing.

Rkieferbaum (talk) 14:45, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Closure is perfectly fine. This is a copyright violation. Yann (talk) 15:07, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Would you mind explaining why FOP doesn’t apply here? Rkieferbaum (talk) 16:05, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Please see Commons:Freedom of panorama#Summary table. Text is not included. @DarwIn: Why did you undelete it? Yann (talk) 19:28, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Yann I didn't even knew I restored it until now.... I was looking what was there this afternoon on my cellphone, and should have misclicked somewhere. My apologies, it was not intentional. I've redeleted it now. Darwin Ahoy! 19:43, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Yann: thanks for pointing that out. That table is wrong with regards to Brazil - there's no exclusion of text in the Brazilian FOP provision (article 48 of Act 9.610/98). I'll see about fixing that when I get the time. Rkieferbaum (talk) 20:22, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

File:Binibining Pilipinas 2022 special awards.jpg

Hi Yann. Could you take a look at File:Binibining Pilipinas 2022 special awards.jpg? The image does look like it was uploaded to Flick under the claimed license, but the EXIF data is pretty clear that the image isn't to be used commercially. The watermark-like graphical element in the image's lower right corner also makes me wonder whether this could be a case of COM:LL. FWIW, the EXIF data does pre-date the Flickr license and the Flickr account holder and attributed photographer in the EXIF data seem to be the same person; so, it's entirely possible the copyright holder uploaded the image to Flickr a few years after it was taken and released it as such. The file also has an extracted version that may have the same issue. Is there a way to mark a file like this where the EXIF data so clearly contradicts the license used for Commons so that the file doesn't get mistakenly tagged for speedy deletion? -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:21, 20 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Marchjuly: Yes, you are right. The EXIF data is incomplete and looks suspicious. And I am surprised that this claimed professional photographer has only 134 followers. Also this is the only beauty pageant picture in his albums. A deletion request is quite in order. Yann (talk) 03:31, 20 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for taking a look at this. I've started a DR about the file and its extracted image. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:19, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

File:מועצת הרבנות הראשית ודניאל שנשינסקי ממכון צומת.jpg

Hello.

Following Ankry's request, I have now uploaded the original full-resolution image here:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%A2%D7%A6%D7%AA_%D7%94%D7%A8%D7%91%D7%A0%D7%95%D7%AA_%D7%94%D7%A8%D7%90%D7%A9%D7%99%D7%AA_%D7%95%D7%93%D7%A0%D7%99%D7%90%D7%9C_%D7%A9%D7%A0%D7%A9%D7%99%D7%A0%D7%A1%D7%A7%D7%99_%D7%9E%D7%9E%D7%9B%D7%95%D7%9F_%D7%A6%D7%95%D7%9E%D7%AA.jpg

I am the photographer and copyright holder.
The undeletion request was closed before I managed to upload the original file.
Could you please review the matter again?
Thank you. ושמחת בחייך (talk) 07:20, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
ושמחת בחייך: Hi, Sorry, but that's not the original picture. It is a scale-down version without EXIF data. And please use {{Own}} for your own picture and the date in English. I fixed it for you this time. Yann (talk) 09:25, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

File:Graph Construction Pan-genome.png

Hi Yann. Could you take a look at File:Graph Construction Pan-genome.png? The file is being used as the lead image in en:Pan-genome graph construction where it's described as being adapted from here: "adapted from" could just be another way of saying a "derivative of". I can't find the exact same image in the source provided for that citation, but there are many that look very similar in terms of coloring and other stuff. It's possible the same image is found behind this paywall site. Anyway, I can't tell whether the sourced academic paper has been released under a free enough image for Commons, which most likely would also apply the images contained therein; if it is, then perhaps all that's need is to add attribution to the original source of the image. FWIW, the uploader doesn't seem to be still active on either English Wikipedia or Commons; it looks like they were active for a few months last year while editing the English Wikipedia article and then just stopped when they finished. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:17, 23 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Marchjuly: Hi, Hmm. This is not very complex, but it may still get a copyright. Threshold of originality and derivative works are always uncertain. So I am not sure. You could ask on COM:VPC or create a deletion request. Sorry, I can't say more. Yann (talk) 08:51, 23 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for taking a look at this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:55, 24 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sock of a user you blocked

Hey Yann, I wanted to bring to your attention these checkuser results for a user you had banned. You might expect more problematic uploads from user:Darlingg00 as it is a sock of User:IIXZER0XII. Épine (talk) 15:03, 28 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Photo from an unverified account

Hi Should be the photos be deleted of he should be given a time to send an email? The photos are used in social media and in the press. But it is possible that the photos are from him. Panam2014 (talk) 15:25, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I tagged a photo and left a message to the user. Since they are obviously selfies and the account bears the person's name, it may be fine. Yann (talk) 15:34, 29 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

File:Escuela argentina creada por Gemini.png, File:Escuela argentina creada por Gemini 2.png and File:Escuela argentina creada por Gemini 3.png

Hi Yann, I am writing to you regarding the deleted images titled ‘Argentine school created by Gemini’. As I explained in the request for undeletion, the images were created for illustrative and educational purposes, to discuss the way in which AI represents Argentine schools, as part of a campaign we are running at Wikimedia Argentina, with the aim of improving educational information on Wikidata (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Argentina/Actividades/Ninguna_escuela_sin_wikidata_2026). We need the images to be under a Creative Commons licence so that we can use them in materials for schools, which is why we published them on Wikimedia Commons. They are certainly not intended for personal use, and of course there are many real images of schools across the country that we will also be using as part of the campaign (we will even be encouraging more to be released), but we wanted to use these illustrations as part of the material. I explained this in my request; I really do not understand why it was not taken into consideration. As I need the images, I am going to republish them using my institutional user account. I am not the creator of the prompt used to generate the images, which is why I took the trouble to show the person who created them how to release them. I also explained Commons to them. After they were deleted, I followed the procedure to request their restoration, but this was refused. I have no choice but to publish them under my own name.
