Photographers and Commons project showcase

[edit]

We are looking for stories about your photo tours and projects on Commons!

You photographed all villages in your district, all plants in your botanical garden or you took pictures at an event? You categorized and described thousands of photos or created a tool that helps using or uploading photos? Please present the project at the Commons pre-conference at the Wikimania in Paris.

Please write one sentence about the project you want to present and how long you want to present (maximum 30 minutes).

  1. Our work takes us to many different places, often far from familiar surroundings. Because we usually plan our trips well in advance, we have developed a workflow for finding promising photography locations and anticipating weather and lighting conditions before we arrive. In this talk, we will share the tools, techniques, and strategies we use to plan successful photography trips and create images for Wikimedia Commons. --Matthias Süßen (talk) 11:35, 11 June 2026 (UTC) & Frank Schulenburg[reply]
  2. Perhaps as a counterpoint, I can talk about a six-week trip through Southern India, where I was forced to take what conditions where available at the moment - "if its Tuesday, this must be Tanjore". Some 9000 exposures, and some 4200+ uploads to Commons, WLE-India, WLM-India, Wiki loves Folklore India, Wiki loves Museums-India, Wiki loves Science-India. And trying to stay true to my ambition to do good image descriptions and categorization nevertheless. --Wuselig (talk) 22:29, 11 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Photowalks in connection with WLx or GLAM activities have become quite popular. And the numerical output is often very impressive. But what if only the Category of the event is full, but the images don't find their way to the category of the location. What if we have hundreds of images with the filename "Artifacts in the Art Gallery ttkcvrvb122k23iph (123)" with the sole descriptive text "Photos taken from a trip to ..."? I'd like to present some examples of how I try to encourage to make GLAM events not just picture taking happenings, but events that bring added value to the written encyclopedia Wikipedia, to Wikidata and to Commons. When I do my own Museum Photography, how I try to clean up overcrowded categories, like the ones described above and perhaps lay some groundwork for structuring collections for wikidata. --Wuselig (talk) 22:29, 11 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Tools that make Wikimedia Commons Contributions reliable and easy - -- Suyash Dwivedi (💬) 14:29, 28 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Using Maps and GIS for Wiki Takes Events --Ailura (talk) 14:36, 28 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  6. ...

I'm not sure yet

  1. Highly unlikely. Users with Extended Rights like admins on Commons are also very strongly invited to the UwER Convening at the same time. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 08:34, 25 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  2. It's impossible for me, due to health problems I no longer travel. I have arthritis, and I also have an appointment with a physiotherapist every Tuesday. Best regards --Pierre André (talk) 16:15, 30 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
